The Institute of Political Science and Governance of the Tallinn University celebrated its 15th Anniversary today with a reception at the Mustpeade Maja (Blackheads House) at Tallinn. The reception followed the conference „Challenges for Central and Eastern European Statehood in the Second Phase of Transition“.
After the conference, two scientific journals of the Institute of Political Science and Governance were introduced – Acta Politica (No. 3) and Studies of States and Societies (No.1).
I could only attend the evening reception, but could not take part in the conference itself, since I had the possibility in the morning to conduct a seminar on protection of human rights in the EU at the University of Tartu.
The Mustpeade Maja, at Pikk Street 26, is one of the few Tallinn Old Town’s renaissance buildings that has survived. In the 14th Century, the house belonged to the Brotherhood of Blackheads that consisted of young merchants. The name „Blackheads“ refers to the patron of the Brotherhood, whose homeland, according to a legend, was Africa.
